AN OVERVIEW OF RACES HELD BY ROSCOE PACK 620

The Rain Gutter Regatta Rules And Specifications

  1. The boat must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting year. The boat should be substantially built by the Scout. Parental supervision in the construction of the boat is encouraged. The boat should be assembled from the B.S.A. Raingutter Regatta Kit parts only. Additional decals, paint, and glue are permitted.

  2. Overall width shall not exceed 1.875 inches.

  3. Overall length from bow to stern (including rudder) shall not exceed 7.00 inches, nor shorter than 6.50 inches

  4. The mast can be no taller than 6.50 inches from the deck surface

  5. The boat must have a single hull. (All catamarans will be disqualified.)

  6. The sail must be the one supplied with the B.S.A. Raingutter Regatta Kit. The sail may be trimmed and shaped, but may not be larger than the material supplied.

  7. The keel and rudder may be glued anywhere on the bottom of the boat, but cannot exceed 7.00 inches in overall length

  8. Once the race is started, the boat may not be touched, except by a judge. If the loser of a race touches his boat during that race, he will get a first warning. If he touches it again in another race, he will be disqualified from the competition. If the winner of a race touches his boat during the race, there will be a re-race and he will be warned. If he touches his boat again during the competition, he will be disqualified.

  9. Details such as decals and paint are permissible as long as these details are securely glued or fastened to the boat. The scouts are encouraged to decorate their boat.

  10. Inspection: Each boat must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The inspectors have the right to disqualify any boat that does not meet these specifications. If, at registration, a boat does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official registration period to correct the problem. After final approval, boats will not be re-inspected unless the boat is damaged in handling or in a race. Boats can not be modified after inspection, unless the boat is damaged in handling or in a race.

  11. Any unsportsmanlike conduct by the scout (or parent) will be grounds for immediate disqualification. Any scouts roaming in the school hallways during the races without prior permission from a Scout Leader will be disqualified.

  12. We will have an overall judge to observe adults uprighting boats in a timely manner

The Pinewood Derby Rules And Specifications

  1. Each Scout must have contribute to the making of his car. Scouts must be present to race.

  2. Overall width shall not exceed 2.75 inches. The minimum width between the wheels is 1.75 inches.

  3. Overall length shall not exceed 7.00 inches. The wheel base must be between 4.31” and 4.56” on center. NO EXTENDED WHEEL BASES. Use the axle slots as provided in your BSA kit.

  4. The minimum ground clearance between the car body and the track is 0.375 (3/8”) inches.

  5. Weight shall not exceed 5.00 ounces (141.72 grams). No loose materials of any kind are permitted
    in the car. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood, metal, and plastic only, provided it is securely attached into the body or on top of the car.

  6. Washers, wheel bearings, springs and bushings are prohibited. The car must compete with the wheels and axles supplied with a B.S.A. Pinewood Derby Kit.

  7. Only dry lubricant such as powdered graphite or PTFE (Teflon) will be permitted. (Do not use oil or silicone spray lubricants, as these will soften the plastic wheels.)

  8. Burrs on wheels and axles may be removed. Wheels may not be crowned, they must be flat. Cars with shaved or turned wheels will not be allowed to compete. Any indication of work other than removing burrs may disqualify the car. Other alterations of the wheels are prohibited!

  9. Unsportsmanlike conduct by any scout may be grounds for disqualification.

  10. Check in is at least 10 minutes before your scheduled start time. Races will not be delayed for tardy scouts.

  11. Race format will be lane rotation. Each car will race once in each of the 4 lanes and a composite time will determine the standings. Medals will be given for 1st through 3rd, with each participant receiving a patch. Weekend racing will consist of 6 preliminary heats and a final for 6 trophies.

  12. Cars that jump the track due to unstable weight distribution will not be given special treatment. Heats may be rerun due to track inconsistencies, etc. at the discretion of Pack 620. Heats will not be rerun because a car is built poorly. Build your car to finish!!!!!

FAMILY RULES

  1. Race is open to all scouts, moms, dads, sisters, brothers, and grandparents of scouts. Kits are sold at Hobby Lobby, Hobby town, Scout Shop.

  2. Maximum car weight is 5.00 ounces. Wheels must fit the track and not cause damage to the track or other participants.

  3. Cars must be freewheeling with no starting, or propulsion device.

  4. Limit one entry per person.

  5. Winner of the family race will receive a prize yet rto be determined.

 

All Decisions of the Judges are Final.
